What is Visa Run?
A visa run is a trip made purely to exit a country, cross an international border, and re-enter in order to reset a short-term entry permission or obtain a fresh visa stamp. Visa runs are common among long-term travellers, digital nomads, and expats living in a country on tourist or short-stay visas that don't permit permanent residency.
The classic scenario involves someone living in Thailand on a tourist visa: when their permitted stay expires, they travel to a neighbouring country — typically Malaysia or Myanmar — spend a night near the border, and return for a fresh entry stamp. Many countries have tightened the rules significantly, limiting consecutive visa-run entries or requiring evidence of onward travel and sufficient funds to prevent long-term tourists from living indefinitely on back-to-back tourist visas.

Six weeks into his Chiang Mai stay, James needed to do his first visa run. He took the overnight bus to Penang — 10 hours and 300 baht each way — spent one night eating spectacular char kway teow in Georgetown, then returned to the Thai border at Mae Sai for a fresh 30-day stamp. The whole trip cost about £30 in transport and £15 in accommodation, and roughly 24 hours of his life. He developed an unexpected fondness for Penang as a result.
