What is eVisa?
An eVisa (electronic visa) is a travel authorisation issued entirely online — applied for, approved, and delivered digitally, without visiting an embassy, mailing your passport, or collecting a physical stamp beforehand. The eVisa is linked to your passport number in the destination country's immigration database and border officials verify it electronically when you arrive.
Countries with eVisa systems include India, Australia (ETA), New Zealand (NZeTA), Turkey, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and many others. The advantages over traditional visa applications are significant: the process typically takes minutes to complete, requires no personal appearance at a consulate, and approval often arrives within 24-72 hours by email — as a PDF to print or screenshot on your phone.

James needed a visa for India. Two years earlier this had involved posting his passport to the High Commission and waiting three weeks. Now he completed the Indian e-Tourist Visa application online in 20 minutes, paid roughly $30 USD, and received approval by email 48 hours later. At Delhi airport, the e-visa was verified by scanning his passport at the immigration desk — the officer didn't even ask to see the email. The entire pre-trip bureaucracy had taken less time than the queue at the old consulate used to.
