What is Flashpacker?
A flashpacker is an upmarket backpacker — someone who travels independently with a single bag and a flexible itinerary, but with a significantly larger budget than a traditional budget backpacker. The term blends "flash" (British slang for expensive or showy) with "backpacker," capturing the paradoxical figure who wants the freedom of backpacker-style travel but the comfort of better accommodation and higher-quality food.
The flashpacker demographic typically includes professionals taking career breaks, travellers who backpacked in their twenties and are now returning with more income, or simply people for whom the dormitory model never appealed but the independent ethos did. Flashpackers often carry more technology — laptop, quality camera, noise-cancelling headphones — and are likely to work remotely for part of their trip.

Sofia had spent two weeks in Vietnam and refused to apologise for staying in boutique hotels rather than hostels. She carried a 32-litre daypack, had no fixed itinerary, caught local sleeper trains, and ate almost exclusively at places where the menu was only in Vietnamese. She also paid £80/night for a beautifully restored colonial apartment in Hoi An. "Backpacker spirit, flashpacker budget," she told anyone who asked.
