Wanderlust
What is Wanderlust?
Wanderlust is a strong, innate desire to travel and explore the world. The word originates from German — "wandern" (to hike, to roam) and "Lust" (desire, pleasure) — and entered English in the early twentieth century, reflecting the Romantic-era German cultural ideal of journey as a path to self-discovery and spiritual growth.
In contemporary usage, wanderlust describes not just a desire to travel but a deeper restlessness — a sense that the horizon always holds something more interesting than wherever you currently are. While frequently used casually on social media captions, the word captures a genuine psychological trait observed in some individuals: a sensitivity to novelty, a high tolerance for uncertainty, and a deep need for new experiences over routine.
Example of Wanderlust
"Is it wanderlust or are you just running from something?" Priya's therapist had asked half-jokingly. She'd been back from Morocco for three weeks and had already booked flights to Georgia. She thought about it seriously. Both, she decided. But mostly she loved that particular feeling on the first afternoon in a new city — when everything is slightly confusing and impossibly full of possibility.
