What is Bleisure?
Bleisure is a portmanteau of "business" and "leisure," used to describe travel that blends professional obligations with personal enjoyment. A bleisure trip typically begins as a work trip — a conference, a client meeting, a company retreat — but extends beyond the core business schedule so the traveller can explore the destination on their own time.
The phenomenon has grown substantially as remote and hybrid work arrangements have redefined what "work travel" means. Rather than flying in on Monday and flying home Friday, bleisure travellers might arrive over the weekend, spend two days sightseeing, handle their work commitments mid-week, and stay on for another weekend of personal exploration.
Bleisure is particularly common among millennials and Gen Z professionals, who tend to prioritise experiences and work-life integration over strict separation of the two.
Example of Bleisure
Priya's company sent her to Singapore for a three-day fintech summit. Instead of booking the cheapest return flight for Sunday, she extended her trip by five days, visited Sentosa Island, took the train to Kuala Lumpur, and worked remotely from a café in Georgetown before flying home. She counted the flight as a work expense while covering the extra hotel nights herself — a bleisure arrangement now common across her company.
