Travel Budget
What is Travel Budget?
A travel budget is a financial plan setting the total amount and daily spending allocation for a trip. Effective budgeting requires forecasting costs across flights, accommodation, food, local transport, activities and entrance fees, visa costs, travel insurance, and a contingency fund — typically 10-15% of the total — for unexpected costs. Tracking actual spend against the budget during travel allows course-correction before the contingency is exhausted.
Common daily budget benchmarks vary enormously by destination and travel style: Southeast Asia is regularly managed on $20-50/day for budget travellers; Western Europe requires $100-200+ even on modest budgets; Scandinavia and Iceland can exceed $300/day for basic travel. Understanding the local cost of living before departing — particularly accommodation and transport costs — is the single most important input to realistic budget planning.
Example of Travel Budget
James planned his six-month South American trip with a £12,000 total budget: £1,200 on flights, £800 on travel insurance and visas, £600 contingency, and a daily budget of £52 for everything else — accommodation, food, transport, and activities across 163 days. He tracked every expense in a notes app. By month three he was averaging £44/day and had £900 of unspent budget shifted to contingency. He upgraded his final two weeks accordingly — better accommodation, a glacier tour he'd considered unaffordable — and came home exactly on total budget.
