Early Check-In
What is Early Check-In?
Early check-in is access to a hotel room before the property's standard check-in time — typically 2pm to 3pm — for travellers arriving earlier in the day. Most hotels cannot guarantee early check-in without advance arrangement because rooms must first be cleaned and inspected after the previous guest's departure. Some properties offer early check-in complimentarily based on availability, particularly for loyalty programme members or at quieter periods; others charge a half-day rate.
Guaranteed early check-in — useful for travellers arriving on overnight flights at 7am — typically requires booking the room from the previous night, paying for a night you don't use purely to secure the room's availability. It is almost always worth contacting the hotel directly in advance to discuss availability, as many properties accommodate early check-in without formal charge when the room is available and the guest asks politely.
Example of Early Check-In
James landed in Istanbul at 5:45am. His standard check-in was 3pm. He messaged the hotel a week earlier — politely, explaining his early arrival — and was told a room would be held if available. He arrived at 7am, was given a corner room on the fourth floor, showered, slept for three hours, and was exploring the Spice Bazaar by noon. The hotel charged nothing. The alternative was nine hours in an airport lounge he couldn't access.
